Connection of regional road 229 “del Lago d’Orta” with national road 33 “del Sempione” in the east of Gravellona Toce (Verbania)

The purpose of the intervention was to allow the continuation of the section of the variant, previously in partial operation as far as the southern entrance of the Municipality of Casale Corte Cerro, to run east of Gravellona Toce with the current regional road 33, so as to relieve the “Gravellona Toce junction” from the substantial traffic crossing the urban center, which was particularly congested, since three state roads and the traffic coming from the junction of the A26 “dei Trafori” highway converge on it.
The road is therefore presented as a completion of the Variant to regional road 229, already built in the 1990s in the section from Omegna to Casale Corte Cerro. For this reason, the grafting of the new road maintained as a fixed point the existing viaduct of the section of the Variant already in use, and from here the best route was defined to ensure the connection to state road 33 in the most direct, technically and environmentally sustainable way.
From a typological point of view, the new artery belongs to class C1 with 2 lanes of width equal to 3.75 m, with 2 paved side embankments (each 1.50 m wide).
The work is included in the territory east of the inhabited areas of Casale Corte Cerro and Gravellona Toce according to a route composed of a single rod with a total length of 2,708.62 m; it briefly provides for the following interventions:
- Elevated traffic circle on deck named “South Roundabout,” with an internal radius of 18 m, at the intersection on existing viaduct with the first section of the Variant to regional road 229 coming from Omegna;
- Viaduct “Strona 1” with a length equal to 200 m for a first crossing of the Strona stream;
- Embankment section of length equal to 139.77 m between the “Strona 1” Viaduct and the subsequent “Vallessa” Viaduct;
- “Vallessa” Viaduct with a length equal to 145 m for overpassing Vallessa creek;
- Embankment section of length equal to 649 m between the “Vallessa” Viaduct and the subsequent “Strona 2” Viaduct;
- “Strona 2” Viaduct 110 m long for re-surface of the Strona stream;
- “Bocciol” tunnel 1,269.70 m long within the slopes of Mount Mottarone;
- Bridge “Rio Cirisolo” of length equal to 20 m for the Cirisolo stream overtopping;
- Junction traffic circle named “North Roundabout”, of internal flowerbed radius equal to 15 m, at, the level crossing and intersection with state road 33.
